Boy on a Donkey

Right next to the stairs leading to Zschopauer Straße stands the “Boy on a Donkey,” a shell limestone sculpture by Emil Mund, erected around 1940. It was restored in 2015 because the boy's head had been severed. Emil Mund, born in Berlin in 1884, lived in Chemnitz as a freelance sculptor from 1924 onwards, where he was a member and art curator of the Chemnitz Art Hut. He exhibited together with Marianne Brandt, the famous metal designer, and the painter Martha Schrag, as well as with Bruno Ziegler and Heinrich Brenner, who created the sculptural elements at the Agricola Gymnasium, presented in Station 10.

Coming from the park the sculpture is located on the left side of the stairs leading to Zschopauer Straße. Please note: the sculpture is accessible only via the stairs. The group of figures stands on a pedestal, facing the street.

We describe the sculpture from the figures’ perspective.

The sculpture depicts a boy sitting on a donkey. His head is tilted slightly to the right. His face looks friendly; he is smiling. He is wearing a short-sleeved summer sweater with a collar and shorts. The boy has his hands resting on the donkey’s shoulders. His legs are at roughly a right angle. His feet are flat on the pedestal.

The donkey is in a reclining position. Its ears are pointed outward to the sides. Its belly rests on the base. The left front leg is bent upward and the hooves are raised. The right front leg rests bent on the base.

The figures are rendered realistically. Due to the shell limestone material, the surface has large pores.

Tactility: easily felt, but care should be taken on the stairs
