Tomb of Franz Xaver Rewitzer
The honorary tomb of Franz Xaver Rewitzer is made of sandstone. Born in Munich in 1798 and deceased in Chemnitz in 1869, Rewitzer originally came to Chemnitz for the textile industry, but his career was primarily political. As chairman of the Chemnitz Craftsmen's Association and a liberal politician in the Chemnitz city parliament, he already held important offices before being elected to the Saxon state parliament for two years in 1848. In 1867, shortly before his death, he was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation.

The front of the tomb faces Zschopauer Straße. It consists of two parts, both made of sandstone and arranged in an “L” shape. The front, lower part is a stone coffin with a lid. It is approximately 50 centimeters high, one meter wide, and 1.5 meters long. The coffin has a simple design. At the foot of the coffin are two round metal handles.
A vertical stele with a triangular roof forms the rear part of the tomb. It is approximately 1.7 meters high and 15 centimeters deep. The sides of the stele are decorated with column ornamentation.
At the top of the front of the stele is a wreath of honor; it resembles a funeral wreath with medals and a ribbon, with a wreath band in the center. On it, “F. X. Rewitzer” is carved in capital letters. Behind the wreath on the stele’s surface, the Latin inscription “sei = nem” can be read. Below the wreath, roughly in the center of the stele, are the dates of birth and death: Born October 9, 1798. Died May 30, 1869, as well as the note “Dedicated by the Craftsmen’s Association.”
The stone surface of the tombstone is porous and moss-covered due to weathering.
